Design Inspiration
Monkeys appear everywhere in Japanese folklore, temples, and old woodblock prints. In some traditions they were even believed to protect people from misfortune. The characters above the design read 安全 (anzen), meaning “safety” or “protection.” In old beliefs, monkeys were seen as clever guardians that could ward off bad spirits and bring balance between the human and spirit worlds. Maybe that’s why they show up so often around shrines and sacred places across Japan.
